Gordon was born in Glasgow and studied art first there (at the Glasgow School of Art) from 1984-1988 and later at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, from 1988-1990. His first solo show was in 1986.
Much of Gordon's work is seen as being about memory and uses repetition in various forms. In one early work, Meaning and Location (1990), a passage from the Gospel of Luke is given with a comma in different places, thus subtly changing the meaning of the sentence. List of Names (1990-present) is a list of every person Gordon has ever met and can remember. One version of this is applied onto the wall of a stairwell in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Crying Men The photographs are multi-layered in the sense that they toy with a suggestive, underlying truth that is never revealed, arousing desire in the viewer for resolution while always leaving it unsatisfied.

Scene for new Heritage Trilogy 2004 video and sound installation/video/DVD/Colour/Sound, 4’33”

The three films travel through time to show the artist’s vision of the future and how the meanings of history and monuments change over time. Set in the futuristic world of 2045 the first film follows a group travelling to the memorial park at Petrova Gora, Croatia.
d0079151_1022358.jpg

They visit communist monuments and debate over their long-forgotten meaning in traditional Croatian folk song that the artist recasts as a futuristic language. The second part is set twenty years later, as a young boy looks out from the monument’s tower to an empty landscape, as though the building has by then acquired a mystical dimension. The final film shows young teenagers talking, playing and walking around the derelict monument.

In recent years, Ralf Peters has repeatedly found new ways of shedding light on the criteria for perception today. In this process, he has from the very outset endeavored to ensure his work did not require a great amount of material. Thus, he has digitally processed the images he has found - which ostensibly promise us a true depiction of the world - to create a variety of series in which specific contemporary phenomena are shown in a new light.

Many Many Colored Smarties or The Colors of a One-Dimensional World
In one of these series, he maltreats the phenomenon of gas stations. With a sense of ironic rigidity and seriousness, by means of the PC he tries to generate a pure architectural form for the uniqueness that each of these sales outlets of the global oil companies pretends to offer us - with all sorts of ornamental trappings. For this reason, he purges the gas stations of logos, lettering and ad billboards, He makes the buildings resemble one another - after all, their former variety has increasingly given way to one-dimentionality in the course of gradual rationalization through global marketing. What remains are beautifully illuminated buildings, which purportedly have an unmistakable identity rhanks to their luminescent colors. Peters interested in the banal formula boasted by contmporary everday architecture. Once these are formulas - like some secret signs of rigid functionality that reflect the unwavering power of the business world. The semblance of colorful if vapid directs our gaze to the eradication of aesthetic difference that greets us wherever we tread in a modern city. Though blinded by the gleaming surfaces of these architectonic replicas, extracted by aestheticization from their commercial context, our perception is honed to form an in-depth critique of our notion of human architecture.

Nauman studied mathematics and physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and art with William T. Wiley and Robert Arneson at the University of California, Davis. He worked as an assistant to Wayne Thiebaud and in 1966 he became a teacher at the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1968 he met the singer and performance artist Meredith Monk and signed with the dealer Leo Castelli. In the 1980s he moved to New Mexico. Much of his work is characterised by an interest in language which often manifests itself in a playful, mischievous manner. For example, the neon Run From Fear- Fun From Rear, or the photograph Bound To Fail which literalises the title phrase and shows the artist's arms tied behind his back. There are however, very serious concerns at the heart of the work. Nauman seems to be interested in the nature of communication and the inherent problems of language, as well as the role of the artist as supposed communicator and manipulator of visual language. Nauman received in 1993 the Wolf Prize in Arts (Israel) for his distinguished work as a sculptor and his extraordinary contribution to twentieth-century art. In 1999 he received the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale. In 2004 he created his work Raw Materials at Tate Modern. Artfacts.net ranked Nauman as the number one among living artist in 2006, followed by Gerhard Richter and Robert Rauschenberg.

Lippmann, Rosenthal&Co. 2006 Mixed-media installation, De Appel, Amsterdam
d0079151_1114874.jpg
Jewish bank by the name of Lippmann,Rosenthal & Co.had been trading at 6-8 Nieuwe Spiegelstraat in Amsterdam since 1859; a building today occupied by the De Appel center for contemporary art. During WWII and the German occupation of the Netherlands, the Nazis deliberately used the name of the well-established Jewish bank, when they set up a counterfeit branch in the Sarphatistraat, so they could make people believe that their possessions were safe in the vaults of this alleged Jewish banking house. In 1941-1942, all Dutch Jewish citizens were forced to hand over their securities, cash, bank holdings, art objects, precious metals and jewels to Lippmann, Rosenthal & Co. Sarphatistraat. Apart from the name, the two banks had nothing in common, and were administered quite separately.

Recently Kjell has put an emphasis on working live with a wide range of musicians. The live works feature the production of flicker videos, which have also been presented in various exhibitions since 2002. The flicker is sound given video sync, thus becoming video and revealing the self -identity of the two. The flicker image is perhaps the most simple and fundamental image we can think of, the oscillation between shades of light and darkness, given from the outside as a simple binary pairing of the visual experience. The flicker videos came about as a counteraction to an easy intellectual approach to art viewing. The flicker works can be harsh to watch, as they are perceived on a physical level. The black and white works are often perceived in colours. There is a threshold that needs to be overcome, so the works in a way resist the viewer, or the other way around. A still image from the video reads like a minimal work; set in motion the work turns into its opposite. The art work, having all the traditional marks of the art-making process, turns into a phenomenon and touches the demarcation line between art and non-art.
